about

My current thinking about the (post-industrial, noise and other) sound must be contextualised: while writing these lines I am finding myself in a medium-size European city in Lithuania - Kaunas, it’s the end of 2018.
As in all urban centers, here too, the abundant noise which is ingrained into our daily lives, has become a constant - rarely do we identify it. This noise has become a pallet for three (sound) artists visiting this city, each of them for two weeks at a time, on Matters_ residency. The sounds that were captured by the residents of the program in the streets, crossroads, alleys, public buildings, construction sites, sounds that are reflected from walls, in the fortresses, gunpowder magazines, construction are all related by one - hum*n - factor. Spaces, created by hum*ns for hum*ns, streets, connecting and dividing places (we) strive to reach or to leave, equipment-machinery-apparatuses that are (seemingly) to maximise the efficiency of hum*n activities, all of which makes / resonates sounds back to the hum*n.
Through a variety of exercises in listening, hearing, using specific acoustic qualities of places of their interest, selecting particular sound events, Brigitta Bödenauer, Donia Jourabchi and William “Bilwa” Costa pursue to capture the essence of (this) city in its here-now-ness, to reflect on it and paraphrase it, interpret or synthesise it.
(This) city, the tension within, power struggles, remains of (a) history in some way resonate within the structures of each of the pieces included herein. All of the sounds which we fail to notice in our daily rush take centre stage as the hierarchy of sounds is reversed. Each of the pieces also reminds of the temporary nature of things: everything is subject to change and decay. Would there still be a city here after a hundred of years, most of the sources of sound we hear in this album will by then be most probably obsolete.
